A week of celebrations commemorating el Día de las Fuerzas Armadas, or Armed Forces Day, came to a close at the weekend, with thousands of people having had an insight into some of the duties performed by the Spanish military.

Locally, the Orihuela local police arranged a special event in one of the municipality´s smaller villages, but there´s no question that the main highlight was in Cartagena, where there were numerous static displays as the navy opened up some of their ships for the public to visit.

The King of Spain, Filipe VI, presided over the main event in Madrid, the first time he did so as King, and also visited Cartagena on Thursday, celebrating the centenary of the Arma de Submarina, and unveiling a commemorative plaque.
