The Supreme Court in Valencia has annulled the requirement for school children to live further than 3 kilometres from their school before being eligible to use the school bus.
The rule was established by the Partido Popular regional government in 2012, whereas a pupil had to live further than 3 kilometres away, in a straight line. Many parent objected to this at the time, including those in rural areas where a straight line distance could be considerably different to that on the road.
The new ruling this week is added to a previous ruling which also outlawed the condition, as it is contrary to the constitutional right to equal treatment, according to Article 14 of the Spanish Constitution.
The complaint was raised by the Compromís political group who have praised the decision of the courts.
