A 47-year-old German tourist died on Monday afternoon, whilst bathing at Cala del Bosque, in the La Zenia area of the Orihuela Costa. The tragedy happened at around 3.30pm when the man, who was on holiday with his wife and son, began to make distress signals towards his family because of difficulties he got into due to the strong currents. Several swimmers tried to save him but were unsuccessful due to the conditions.
The man´s body was spotted floating in the sea near Cala Capitán as strong currents kept the body moving. In view of the sea conditions, a helicopter had to be called in to assist a Guardia Civil boat involved in the recovery operation, and the body was recovered shortly before 6.00pm. The incident happened just days after the lifeguards were stood down following the official end to the summer season.
