Offence: Failing to Allow an Overtaking Vehicle to Return.
Driving close behind another vehicle and / or not allowing sufficient space for an overtaking vehicle to return to the lane safely carries a fine and the loss of points.
Fine: 200 euro fine and the loss of 4 points
Reason: Overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres any vehicle can carry out. Moving into the path of oncoming traffic means that the impact speed would be a calculation resulting from the total speed of each of those vehicle, and so on a stretch of road where the maximum permitted speed is 50 kilometres per hour, assuming both vehicles are travelling at that speed, in the event of an impact the overall speed would be the same as hitting a solid object at 100 kilometres per hour. Therefore, it is crucial that any overtaking manoeuvre is conducted in the shortest time possible. Preventing a vehicle from returning into the correct lane risks lives.
