The railway track operator ADIF has announced an investigation into the earlier train crash which has left 4 people dead, including the driver, and 49 injured, 7 in a serious condition.
Although no cause has been ruled out, initial reports suggest that the cause could have been an object on the line, or it could have been in connection with the points, either a failure, or speeding.
The transport ministry has confirmed that maintenance work was being carried out in the area, and the train had been diverted to a section with a lower maximum permitted speed of 30, but the impact damage suggests that the train could have been travelling at a higher speed.
The train was a diesel powered unit first introduced in the 80´s. The investigation remains open.
