A British teacher accused of sex offences has been detained by the National Police in Barcelona, after skipping a court appearance in Essex. Cory Baptiste, 24, was taken into custody in Barcelona on a European Arrest Warrant.

He was due at Basildon Crown Court in August, charged with five offences against children. The National Crime Agency said: “He appeared at a Spanish court and extradition proceedings are under way.”

Baptiste has been charged with five offences of abusing a position of trust involving children aged 17 years and under.
