Torrevieja Mayor Helps the Police
The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón (Los Verdes), hopes to finally facilitate the move of the Local Police Special Operations Group, GRO, who have been waiting to move out of their current location to a new site on the outskirts of the town for the last 7 months.
The problem was that the building, previously used as a tourist information office and even a film crew admin office as part of a campaign to launch the town as a movie location under the previous PP government, had accrued a debt of nearly 700 euro, as the town hall had never paid the mandatory IBI property tax.
The building is owned by the Ministry of Public Works, which obliged the town hall to pay off the debt for the years 2007 to 2016 when the property was used as a tourist office.
The mayor explained that after seven months delay in trying to solve the problem, he “got tired of waiting” and therefore he “went and made the payment” out of his own pocket and therefore, “fixed the problem”, pointing out that there was “no other way”, and that summer is getting closer but the problem needed solving now.
As a pensioner, the mayor also gives up his regular salary for being a councillor, donating it to local charitable causes and associations.
