An emergency ambulance technician from Lanzarote has been charged with fraud, after being caught using the credit card belonging to a deceased victim she transported following an emergency incident.
The emergency occurred at the end of August, when an ambulance was called to attend a woman who was unconscious on a public street.
Tragically, medical staff could do nothing to save the woman, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. An ambulance then transported the woman´s body to the hospital morgue.
A few days later, the woman´s husband was surprised to be notified by his bank that his dead wife had a purchase to the value of 1,453 euro on a card linked to their joint account. Assuming it to be a mistake, a second transaction of 2,087 euro then appeared.
The widower contacted the bank who immediately froze the card, with the transactions being reversed. The case was then reported to the National Police.
It became apparent that the transactions were for hotel reservations, and so the investigators checked the bookings, and found the name of the person to whom they were reserved.
The officers were surprised, although at first believed it a coincidence, that the name on the reservation was the same as one of the ambulance technicians who had attended the scene when the woman had died.
As the investigation continued, it became clear that it was no coincidence, and it was in fact the health worker who was using the card, after apparently removing it from the victim she had attended who had lost their life.
The healthcare worker was arrested by the police and is charged with theft and fraud.
