A well respected member of the Guardia Civil’s search and rescue dogs, Nikol, has reportedly died.

Nikol, a 10 year old German shepherd, had been attached to the Cynological Service of the Guardia Civil since December, 2012, and specialised in searching for bodies which were submerged.

The group, part of the specialist diving sector, was created following the most famous missing person case in Spain’s recent times, the disappearance of Marta de Castillo.
Nikol was brought in from the Netherlands in order to search the Guadalquivir River, and then remained attached to the group fulfilling a role rarely reported on, and one which fulfilled the most tragic of requirements.
The death of anyone who serves is always considered a tragedy, but when it is one of the four legged servants of human society it tends to hit equally as sadly.
