The European Parliament has approved the Covid-19 digital passport scheme, bringing summer holiday hopes a step closer.
As previously reported, the EU Covid-19 certificate will show either proof of a vaccination, a recent negative test result or that the user has recovered from the virus.
MEPs have also called for a free testing regime to be introduced for travellers.
Each vaccine passport will be valid for a period of 12 months and is only for travel purposes.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called it a ‘key step forward towards free and safe travel this summer.’
Spain has already said that it plans to allow international travellers who have a Covid passport to enter the country from this summer, with trials set to start in May.
The EU is also working with the World Health Organization to ensure the vaccine certificate can be used beyond Europe. However, it is yet to be seen how the UK will adapt their system in line with the EU one.
