As reported by sources from the town hall, around 2 am the Local Police received a notice from 112 about a vehicle that was trapped in the Empedrola urbanisation on a road that runs parallel to the riverbed in the municipality of Benissa.

Due to its proximity, two local police patrols travelled to the scene and found the vehicle surrounded by water with a man inside. In addition, the agents observed that a family member of the driver had also moved to the area and that he had fallen into the water from where he was rescued by the agents.

Calpe town hall Tweeted, “When trying to rescue the driver of the vehicle, a Local Police agent lost his footing and fell into the water being dragged by the current at high speed. Hours later, around 6:37, the body of the deceased agent was found 2 kilometres downstream in the municipality of Calpe.”

The trapped vehicle has also been dragged by the water with the driver inside who has finally been able to get out of the car and has been rescued by the Local Police and taken to the regional hospital although his injuries are not serious.

The fallen officer was named Manuel Policarpo, he leaves a widow and two children.
