The current year 2022 is, from January to September, the warmest in the historical series and the third driest in Spain, according to the climate balance published this week by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
In relation to last September, it has been a warm month as a whole, with an average temperature over mainland Spain of 19.8 degrees, 0.6 degrees above the average for that month for the reference period 1981-2010.
In addition, it has been the 21st warmest September since the beginning of the series in 1961 and the 8th warmest of the 21st century.
September was extremely hot on the southeast coast of the peninsula, very hot on the rest of the Mediterranean coast, warm in the centre and in the northwest quadrant of the peninsula, and normal or cold in Extremadura, the south of Castilla y León, and the extreme west of Andalusia.
In the Balearic Islands it had a very warm or extremely warm character, while in the Canary Islands it presented a very variable character from one area to another, resulting in a normal set.
The most notable thermal anomalies were close to +2 degrees in large areas of Catalonia, eastern Aragon, the Valencian Community, the Region of Murcia and eastern Andalusia, reaching values close to +3 degrees in some points of these regions.
In the Balearic Islands, the anomalies also approached the figure of +2 degrees.
The daily maximum temperatures were on average 0.4 degrees above the normal value, while the minimum temperatures were 0.8 degrees above the average, resulting in a daily thermal oscillation 0.4 degrees lower than the normal value for the month.
At the main stations of Menorca/airport and Ceuta, the highest temperature for a month of September was recorded since the beginning of the respective series.
In addition, in sixteen main stations the highest minimum temperature of a month of September was observed since records exist.
In contrast, the stations of Fuerteventura/airport, Lanzarote/airport and La Palma/airport registered the lowest daily maximum temperature in September since the beginning of the respective series.
Last month was dry in terms of rainfall, with an average rainfall value over mainland Spain of 35.7 mm, 81% of the normal value for the month for the reference period: 1981-2010.
It was the 26th driest month of September since the beginning of the series in 1961 and the 10th of the 21st century.
On the other hand, in the Canary Islands it has been the wettest month of September since the beginning of the series in 1961.
September has been between normal and dry in almost the entire Peninsula, with the exception of western Galicia, eastern Asturias, northern Cantabria and the Basque Country, northern Gerona, the Ebro delta region, western Castilla y León, Extremadura, Murcia and southern Aragon.
In the Balearic Islands, September was wet, with the exception of the island of Mallorca, where it was normal.
