The first six Leopard 2 6A4 battle tanks that Spain is sending to Ukraine are expected to arrive in the country today, after they departed from Santander on Friday, as reported by Defence Minister Margarita Robles.
Speaking to the media after attending a PSOE political event in Coslada (Madrid), Robles confirmed the departure of six of the ten tanks promised to Kiev, along with twenty TOA heavy transport vehicles (Transporte Oruga Acorazado).
The Leopards left for Santander last Monday from the facilities where they were repaired, in Alcalá de Guadaira (Seville), and participated in manoeuvres at the Cerro Muriano military base to confirm that they were in perfect working order before being dispatched.
“The Leopards (…) together with twenty transport vehicles, have embarked in the port of Santander [norte] and are already heading towards Ukraine, where they will arrive within five to six days,” Robles told reporters.
“There are four other Leopards under repair and when they are repaired they will also be taken to Ukraine,” added the minister.
Robles also participated in the eleventh meeting at the ministerial level of the Contact Group for the Defence of Ukraine, known as the ‘Ramstein format’, convened by the Secretary of Defense of the United States, Lloyd Austin, and to which The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, and the High Representative of the European Union, Josep Borrel, who spoke by videoconference, also attended.
