Three people investigated for causing the death of two dogs by leaving them in a car

The Guardia Civil has investigated three citizens as alleged perpetrators of crimes of animal abuse for leaving three dogs abandoned for hours in the boot of a car, causing the death of two of them. The third was able to survive thanks to the help provided by Guardia Civil agents, private security agents, veterinary personnel and several citizens.

Citizen security agents and the Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Guardia Civil received notice of the location of three dogs in the boot of a vehicle parked in the sun, with all the windows closed and the animals in very poor condition in the town of Urdax, in Navarre.

Upon arriving at the scene, several citizens were trying to revive the dogs, cooling them with water. The Guardia Civil agents joined the first aid efforts for the animals and at the same time made arrangements for their veterinary assistance and shelter.

The municipal authority contacted those responsible for the Parque de Trikuhary animal shelter, who provided first assistance to the dogs, who were given medication under a veterinary prescription to try to stabilise the animals.

After a few hours without a significant improvement in the dogs, it was decided to transfer the animals to a veterinary clinic in Irún (Guipuzkoa) to be treated urgently. When they arrived, the animals were still alive, but in very critical condition.

In the veterinary clinic, diagnostic tests were carried out to check the condition of the animals and give them the appropriate treatment. The first of them was a nine-month-old Belgian Malinois, named Thai, who died shortly after arriving at the clinic due to severe pulmonary oedema. The second, a one-year-old Belgian Sheepdog named Narco, died of multiple organ failure. The third, a dog named Taiga and the Cane Corso (Italian Mastiff) breed, just five months old, regained consciousness and evolved positively until she was discharged eight days after the events.

The latter, Taiga, is the dog that has survived and is in the Trikuhary shelter for abandoned animals in the Navarrese town of Urdax and has been left in the custody of the mayor of that town, in accordance with the current law on companion animals, waiting for destination decided by the judicial authority.

Investigated three French citizens, owners of the dogs

According to the agents’ investigation, the owners left the three dogs for several hours, they even ate in an establishment near the place where the vehicle was parked, ignoring the announcements that were given over the public address system warning of what was happening.

When they got to the vehicle, they saw how several citizens and Guardia Civil agents were trying to revive the animals, which were confined in a poorly ventilated cabin and deprived of access to water, exposed to the sun constantly and long enough to cause a heat stroke and later the death of two of them.

For this reason, the three French citizens aged 61, 41 and 36 were investigated as allegedly responsible for a criminal offence related to the protection of flora, fauna and domestic animals from animal abuse due to abandonment.

The penalties for this type of crime can be from six to eighteen months in prison and special disqualification from two to four years for the exercise of a profession, trade or trade that is related to animals and their possession.
