Electric motorbike sales plummet in Spain

Whilst we are all being told that the future of motoring is electric, the initial boost to motorcycle and light vehicle sales has taken a nosedive in Spain, with sales overall dropping by almost 30%.

While the first four months of the year show very positive results for the traditional motorcycle and light vehicle sector, with 66,432 registered units (8.7% more than in the same period of the previous year), the data has not been so good for the electrical section. The 4,105 new registrations represent a decrease of -28.9% compared to the same period in 2022. These are figures significantly cushioned by a more moderate drop in the month of April (-9.2%, with 1,270 registered units).

By markets, motorcycles account for 85.7% of all electric light vehicles. They fall in all its variants. A little less the scooter (-25.2%). Much more mopeds (-43.5%) and significantly in conventional motorcycles (-51%).

Only microcars (+26.9%) and tricycles (+121.9%) present positive data. But between the two they only add up to 13.3% of the units.

By territories, the growth of electric motorcycles and light vehicles is led by the autonomous city of Melilla (+80.0%), La Rioja (+42.9%) and Cantabria (+29.4%). At the opposite pole, Catalonia is the community with the biggest drop (-64.9%), followed by the Basque Country (-40.7%) and the autonomous city of Ceuta (-33.3%).

For the general secretary of ANESDOR, the entity that represents the brands of the two-wheel sector in Spain, José María Riaño, “Motorcycles and light vehicles are very necessary in the new mobility, they reduce congestion and take advantage of space with a minimal environmental footprint. The decline in the market contrasts with the positive data from last year. We trust that it will be a temporary bump and we will recover growth in the coming months.”

Despite all this data, this sector has shown to respond well to electrification. Not surprisingly, 8% of all motorcycles sold last year were 100% electric, a very high share compared to the car.
