The Spanish National Fishing Championship, XIII Campeonato de España de Selecciones Autonómicas Mar-Costa Dúos, starts on Thursday 18 May in Ceuta, with the ‘Catch and Release’ category in an event bringing together fishing people from around Spain to the event sponsored by the Ceuti Sports Institute and the Ministry of Development and Tourism.
This competition will last through the weekend with various activities taking place on the beaches of the city.
In the championship, there are 9 teams representing 9 autonomous communities from Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, the Valencian Community, Murcia, Andalusia and finally the two autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, demonstrating their skills in the practice of fishing.
In total there will be 45 couples that will appear in this national tournament.
In addition to the teams, the team captains will also travel with their respective companions, which amounts to more than 120 visitors in the city on those designated dates of the Spanish championship.
However, more than 80% of the participants already arrived in the city from Monday, to train and prepare for this Spanish championship.
As far as Ceuta is concerned, it will be a team of four duos, two of them considered high-level athletes such as Rafael Molina and Juan Ramón Furrasola and Rafael Saragosí and Damián Cabrera. Sergio Anaya and José Manuel Ureba will make up the remaining duos from Ceuta, in addition to the youngest athlete at 14, Pablo Camacho, and his grandfather Rafael Camacho, a history of fishing in Ceuta.
Apart from the sporting interest of organising a championship of these characteristics at a national level, it is the promotion that is made of the city since Ceuta is a pioneer in water sports and in hosting national tournaments.
