In the first four months of 2023, Spain received 21 million arrivals, 32.4% more than in the same period of 2022. Visit and spending records have also been broken in April: 8,4 billion euro, 22.7% more than in 2022 and 20.2% compared to the best pre-pandemic data (2019).
Spain received the visit of 7.2 million international tourists in April, 18.5% more than in the same period of 2022 and 1.2% more than in April 2019.
These figures represent a historical record in the number of visitors and in volume of spending: 8,4 billion euro, 22.7% more than a year ago and 20.2% compared to the best pre-pandemic data, according to data from Frontur and Egatur published by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
In the accumulated of the first four months of the year, Spain has received almost 21 million arrivals, which represents a growth of 32.4% compared to last year; During this four-month period, total spending was 25,6 billion euro, 36.6% over the same period last year and 14.5% above 2019.
For the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Héctor Gómez, “these are extraordinary data that demonstrate, once again, that Spain is at the forefront of world tourism and that tourism is fully recovering.”
Average and daily spending grow
The average expenditure per tourist in the month of April stood at 1,172 euro, with an annual increase of 3.6%. For its part, average daily spending also increased by 11.6%, to 173 euro.
The average duration of international tourist trips was 6.8 days, a figure similar to that of the same month last year. The majority stay among tourists in April is between 4 and 7 nights, with more than 3.7 million travellers choosing this modality and an annual increase of 18.3%.
USA, the fastest growing visiting country
By country, the United Kingdom, which continues to lead the tourist issuing market, with 1.4 million visiting tourists in April, has experienced significant growth (8.7%) compared to the same month in 2022.
France and Germany are the next countries with the most tourists visiting Spain, contributing more than a million visitors each. Tourists from France grew in April by 26.9% in the annual rate and those from Germany by 2%.
Among the rest of the countries of residence, it is worth noting the annual growth of tourists from the United States (60.7% more than in April 2022), which is the country that grows the most this month, Italy (29% more) and Portugal (29.6%). In the accumulated of the first four months, visitors from the US have increased by 75.4%, being the source country where the influx of tourists has grown the most compared to a year ago.
Catalonia, leading destination along with the islands
Catalonia, the first main destination for tourists in April -with 21.3% of the total- received 1.5 million tourists, 33% more than a year ago. The main countries of residence of the tourists that this community receives are France (25% of the total) and the US (10.1%).
After Catalonia, the Balearic Islands -with 16.3%- is the second community in number of international tourists received in April (more than 1.2 million visitors), and like Catalonia it has also experienced strong growth compared to a year ago. 10.5% more tourists arrived in the Balearic Islands in April than in the same month of 2022. Regarding the country of origin, 39.7% come from Germany and 18.3% from the United Kingdom.
The third main destination community by number of tourists is the Canary Islands, with 1.2 million tourists in April and an annual increase of 4.5%. The United Kingdom is the main country of origin (with 36.3% of the total), followed by Germany (17.8%).
In the accumulated of the first four months of the year, the communities that have received the most tourists are the Canary Islands (with almost 4.9 million and an increase of 23.5% compared to the same period in 2022), Catalonia (with close to 4.3 million and an increase of 45.4%) and Andalucía (with more than 3.1 million, 38.7% more).
Of the rest of the communities, the annual increase of 27.3% in the number of tourists who arrived in Andalusia stands out; after it, the second fastest growing is the Community of Madrid, with 21.8% compared to 2022, and in third place was the Valencian Community, with an increase of 10.7%.
