The Ministry of Health wishes to convey its gratitude to the more than 1.1 million people who donated their blood or plasma in 2022, helping to save thousands of patients and encourages the population to collaborate to increase that number.
Sadly, the majority of British people in Spain are still prohibited from donating blood. If you lived in the UK between 1980 and 1996, you cannot donate blood in Spain.
In 2022, a total of 1,145,886 citizens in Spain donated blood and blood components, representing 4% of the population of donating age. For 15.6% (179,481) it was their first time, according to preliminary data from the Ministry of Health.
The total number of donations made last year was 1,721,087 (97,783 apheresis), with an average of 1.5 donations per donor. Thanks to your solidarity, 1,850,000 transfusions have been made, helping 496,000 patients.
Health works with the objective of raising the donor rate to 5%. Therefore, he expresses his gratitude to all donors and remembers that hospitals need blood every day, so he encourages people in good health to come to the donation points.
Blood, administered as a blood component, is an essential and strategic element in many healthcare areas, such as Surgery, Oncology and Transplants. In Spain, two million blood components are transfused annually, which is equivalent to almost four components per minute. Our country has been self-sufficient in blood components for transfusion for more than 30 years and has achieved an excellent level of quality and safety in the transfusion system.
