Catalan police warning of Barcelona Metro crime risk

The Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police, have released a video through social networks in which they demonstrate how thieves act in the lobbies of the Barcelona metro. The recording shows how two criminals choose the victim, and one spits on her without her noticing. He then offers to help her clean up her stain and distract her. While this is happening, the other individual takes her belongings.

Another video shows how a robbery is committed with the same method, but in this case on the underground platform. One thief distracts the victim again and the other steals her bag.

The Catalan police ask travellers to be alert and not to be distracted either on the underground or in the street by unknown people. The notice from the Mossos arrives in the middle of the high season of tourism.

Barcelona Metro stations with the highest crime

According to the latest edition of the ‘Barcelona Metropolitan Area Victimisation Survey’, which the  Institut d’Estudis Regionals i Metropolitans de Barcelona (IERMB) compiles from  8,308 interviews,  crime on the metro accumulates more in stations located in the centre of the city, either in those that act as  interchanges or in those that are located in ‘hubs’ of  economic activity, such as, for example, the Plaza Espanya station.

In addition to Plaza de Espanya station, the largest concentrations of criminal acts are located within the historic centre of the city and its immediate ring.

Looking at the districts of Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc and Ciutat Vella, the Sants, Catalunya and  Urquinaona stations are the ones that appear as the scenes of the most criminal activity in the Barcelona transport network, according to the testimony given by those interviewed for the survey.
