The First Section of the Provincial Court of Palma de Mallorca will begin to hear evidence from today, Thursday, against two men of Algerian nationality, for allegedly skippering a boat that arrived in Cabrera with 16 other people on board, two of them minors.
The Prosecutor’s Office asks for each of them six years in prison, 12 in total, for an alleged crime against the rights of foreign citizens.
In the indictment, the prosecutor points out that the defendants, aged 33 and 24, left on January 4, 2023 in a small motor boat from Bourmedes beach in Algeria, along with 16 other people, with whom they tried to reach Spanish territory, without going through an authorised border post, but were intercepted in the vicinity of the island of Cabrera on the morning of January 6.
According to the Public Ministry, the vessel lacked any identifying element, did not meet safety standards and exceeded its passenger capacity limit, therefore “it posed a serious risk to the life and integrity of the passengers.”
In addition, the Prosecutor’s Office maintains that the defendants carried out this activity in exchange for economic remuneration of 200 euro for each adult, and specifies that the trip was organised by unidentified people in Algeria dedicated to the introduction of people into Spain irregularly.
