Spain has issued a two-euro coin to commemorate the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
As reported by the Spanish Presidency, the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre began issuing these coins, so they are now in circulation. It is estimated that 1.5 million units will leave Spain to tour Europe.
These pieces have the same technical characteristics as other two-euro coins already in circulation, but the difference lies in the national side, which presents a design created for this occasion.
The new Spanish coin shows in its centre the logo of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU. Around the logo are the legends: Spain 2023- Spanish Presidency and Council of the European Union. At the bottom, the mark of the National Currency and Stamp Factory appears. On the outer ring of the coin are the twelve stars of the European flag.
In accordance with the conclusions of the European Council of February 10, 2009, the Member States of the euro area and the countries that have concluded a monetary agreement with the European Union that provides for the issuance of euro coins can issue commemorative coins intended for its circulation.
To do this, they must meet certain conditions, among which it stands out that only two-euro coins can be used for that purpose. In addition, they must have the same technical characteristics as other two-euro coins, but their national side will present a commemorative design of great symbolism at a national or European level.
