The OCU consumer association has denounced Microsoft before the Spanish Consumer authorities, since the responses to ChatGPT searches are misleading, and are not consistent, which can lead to confusion for consumers.
Artificial Intelligence is increasingly present in the lives of consumers. A survey by OCU on the use of ChatGPT has revealed that almost half of Internet users have used this tool. In addition, users were very satisfied with it… although there were some reservations, about security, privacy, and the reliability of the results.
The facts seem to prove those who distrust the system are right, because it is relatively easy to manipulate the results. Therefore, OCU denounced, Bing, the Microsoft search engine, which integrates ChatGPT to achieve better search results, as not being truthful in its results, as there is a certain manipulation that can mislead consumers.
Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, is the second largest in the world. After the integration of ChatGPT, the language model developed by OpenAI, there are users who have started to use it more.
However, OCU we have been able to verify that the answers provided through the Bing chat are misleading for the consumer. Specifically, the search engine offers images of products that are different from those referred to in the text, something that in addition to not being consistent can mislead the consumer, who, thinking that the photograph of the product corresponds to the text, may be encouraged to buy or contract something that they do not really want.
In a statement, the association says, “If the consumer does not have certain and truthful information, they cannot decide what they really want. We are facing a case of bad commercial practices and for this reason OCU, together with the other consumer organisations that are members of the Euroconsumers group, takes a step forward: specifically, we denounce Microsoft before the Ministry of Consumer Affairs for unfair commercial practices, urging the authorities to investigate the matter and, if necessary, establish the corresponding sanctions”.
AI technology, like ChatGPT, is facing a barrage of legal challenges, from plagiarism and copyright violations to privacy and data concerns. In fact, Microsoft themselves became concerned only last week after the AI system was found to be bypassing paywalls, leading to another level of complaints.
Although only recently launched ChatGPT has become the most popular of these AI services, although authenticity and accuracy have been questioned from the very start. In the same OCU survey mentioned above, only 16% of users considered the information provided by ChatGPT as reliable.
