The Ministry of Defence, in coordination with the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, in response to the request received through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, has ordered the activation and dispatch to Tunisia of the “RescEU” module, made up of two fire-extinguishing aircraft, in addition to a total of 27 military personnel including crews, technicians and liaison personnel from the Military Emergency Unit (UME).
This deployment will be supported by an A400 aircraft from the Air and Space Force, which will carry out the air transport of the necessary personnel and material.
The two fire fighting aircraft of the Air Force and Space Force will help put out the terrible fires that are ravaging Tunisia and that have led the authorities of this North African country to request assistance from the European Union Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC).
In 2019, the EU reinforced and strengthened its disaster risk management capacity by improving its Civil Protection Mechanism. The last element introduced, the so-called “RescEU”, consists of a voluntary additional reserve of firefighting aircraft and helicopters prepared to assist Member States when necessary and complement national capacity when a country is overwhelmed.
Spain already activated this module of the European Union in the summer of 2021, deploying an aircraft in Turkey and another in Greece.
