The inclusion of transsexual people in society is an issue of relevance and constant evolution. A few years ago, the possibility that a transgender person could have a child was unthinkable, but thanks to medical advances and the approval of the recent Trans Law, which allows transsexual people to have access to assisted reproductive techniques in conditions of equality, this practice has changed, allowing them to create a family.

However, despite the legislative advances, transgender people continue to have many limitations in their day-to-day life, among them, the lack of specialisation of health professionals and a lack of knowledge, in some cases even prejudices, about hormones, their effects and its impact on fertility, and still facing a lot of unjustified hatred fuelled more recently by the far-right political groups, and their media partners.

According to the Juana Crespo Team, a reproduction assistance centre in Spain, it is estimated that in Spain there are more than 10,000 transsexual people, of which around 700 would be young people of childbearing age with gender dysphoria, that is, people who are born with genitalia that they do not feel as their own and do not correspond to the gender identity they want to develop in their lives. Being a mother or father is the desire of many of them.

In this context, the Juana Crespo Team has created the first Specific Trans Fertility Unit in Spain to meet the great demand for new family models who want to live their gender identity normally.

We are committed to offering adapted and quality solutions that allow these people to fulfil their desire to start a family, guaranteeing full autonomy and respect for their gender identity” according to Dr. De Prados, from the centre.

In an electoral context, important debates are opened on sensitive issues such as transgender pregnancy. These issues invite the population to reflect on individual rights and the diversity of experiences when it comes to forming a family. In this sense, it is important to find equitable decisions that respect the needs of each of the people involved, guaranteeing an approach based on respect, ethics and equality.
