Telecommunications operators in Spain are braced for the highest data traffic peak of the year this week, partly due to the holiday period at the start of the week, and sporting events in the latter half from today.
Orange and Vodafone, the second and third most popular operators in Spain, respectively, have observed a constant growth in the amount of data consumed by their clients since the end of June in the country and both companies expect to break their records this week.
Telefónica, which is the leading operator in Spain, has not yet provided information on data consumption.
Specifically, Orange has detected an increase in traffic of more than 40% “some weeks”, compared to the same period in 2022, and they point out that its network has reached “historic mobile data traffic records that are broken practically week after week”.
Company sources have indicated that mobile data traffic increased on these dates due to “traveling to summer resort areas”, where customers usually do not have access to a Wi-Fi connection.
Added to this, they point out that the volume of 5G data has grown steadily since the beginning of 2023, reaching “a plateau” as of July, for which they have had to extend and reinforce their 5G and pure 5G (or stand alone) networks.
According to their estimates, more than 80% of the beaches in Spain have 5G coverage from the Orange network.
Regarding ‘roaming’, the company has indicated that the number of customers visiting Spain has increased since the last week of June, similar to what happened last year, and has broken its all-time high of traffic last week.
According to the French operator, the average mobile data traffic registered in the second week of August was double and triple that obtained in the second and third quarters of 2023, respectively.
As for mobile data traffic on the Vodafone network, it increased by 17% in July, with the highest traffic peaks in the summer being on weekends and holidays “also associated with sporting events”.
From the company, they emphasise that the applications that get the most traffic are social networks, with video being the most consumed, a trend observed throughout the year and that intensifies in the summer. In addition, the company anticipates that the peak of summer mobile data traffic will be in August, “probably linked to the beginning of the football season.”
The most recent season of LaLiga EA Sports began on Friday, the second period from 18 to 21 August; and the third, from 25 to 28; giving a total of 30 games spread throughout the month.
Along the same lines, this weekend the quarterfinals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup were held, with the Spanish team emerging victorious from their confrontation, facing the Swedish team in the semifinals yesterday.
Beyond football, in the coming weeks the BMX world championship was be held on August 12 and 13; the US ATP 1,000 tournament (tennis), from 14 to 20; The Tour of Portugal (cycling), until the 20th; La Vuelta a Burgos (cycling), from 15 to 19; La Vuelta a España (cycling), starting on the 19th; and the world canoeing championship, from 15 to 19.
