After severe storms, including hail, at the end of last week in areas such as Navarra, Aragón, Castellón and, Catalonia, this week it will rain more than normal in some areas of Spain, but in other areas, we start with a heat wave.
“From the weekend, and as a consequence of the arrival of a very warm air mass together with the presence of high pressure, temperatures will rise in most of Spain, giving rise to the fourth heat wave of the summer”, according to Rubén del Campo, spokesperson for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
The heat wave will bring temperatures between 42 and 44 ºC in the Ebro valley, points of the Tagus, Guadiana and Guadalquivir, and in other areas of Andalusia; around 40 ºC in Madrid, Toledo, Guadalajara or Valladolid and with more than 35 ºC in the rest of the country.
In the Cantabrian and southern Galicia communities it will reach 37 to 39 ºC, and in the Mediterranean it will depend on the day. In general, temperatures will be more normal for these dates in eastern Spain, with between 32 and 37 ºC.
In the Canary Islands, it will be between 32 and 38 ºC, in addition, the hot winds will blow from Africa and carry with them dust in suspension that will cause haze, therefore a worsening of the air quality is expected, which is already very unfavourable due to the smoke from the fire on Tenerife.
In the remainder of the week, “the anti-cyclonic conditions are going to favour sunny weather, so the rains will be scarce,” Del Campo warned. “Although a front will affect Galicia with some persistent rains, which can spread weaker to other points of the Bay of Biscay,” he points out.
“It must be taken into account that we have spent many weeks with hardly any rain in most of the country, which together with the high temperatures and environmental dryness will make the risk of fire very high or extreme,” warns the meteorologist.
As of Wednesday, when the heat wave will begin to subside, “a change in weather may already begin, with a drop in temperatures and an increase in instability,” says the Aemet spokesman.
There will be, in the whole of the week, a positive anomaly of the rains in the northwest interior of the Peninsula, where storms can occur in the middle of the week. There will be more rain than usual for these dates, which is good news.
Although it will only be a patch for the drought that has been affecting us for many months in a row, and that has left all of the Spanish reservoirs below 40% of their capacity.
