Although many places experienced rain at the weekend, with more to come later this week, we will have to wait to see what impact that rainfall might have had, as the latest report published by the State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, estimates that the national average value of accumulated rainfall from the beginning of the hydrological year (October 1, 2022) until August 22 is 487 l/m 2 (around 17% less than the normal value corresponding to said period of 587 l/m 2).
The accumulated amounts are below their normal values in a large part of the Peninsula and the archipelagos, especially in the northeast and southwest quadrants of the peninsula, areas of the Cantabrian coast, east of Cuenca, inland Valencia and in most of the Canary Islands, where less than 75% of that value is reached.
On the other hand, normal values are exceeded in the western half of Castilla y León, Soria, the northern half of Extremadura, the coast of Almería, Alicante, Murcia and points in Madrid, Toledo, Cuenca, Mallorca, Menorca and Tenerife.
During Sunday, the intensity of the rainfall, accompanied by hail, and the strong gusts of wind that affected the east of the peninsula during the day and, especially, Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands, caused occasional blockades of streets and highways, broken electrical and telephone wiring, damage to urban furniture and private vehicles, flooding of basements and other incidents.
In the airports of the Balearic Islands, the wind forced the cancellation of more than a hundred flights and the diversion of another 30. In addition, in the port of Palma, a cruise ship broke moorings due to gusts of wind and collided with an oil tanker, also docked. There were no injuries and, despite the damage suffered by the oil tanker, it did not spill into the sea nor was its navigability compromised.
