Lidl opening two new supermarkets in September
Hot on the heels of direct competitor Aldi, the Lidl supermarket chain continues its expansion in Spain, seeking to get closer to the consumer and grow sustainably. During the month of September, it will open two new stores in Catalonia and the Community of Madrid, with an investment of approximately 13 million euro and the creation of around 60 jobs.
The first store will be located in Barcelona capital, on calle Sant Iscle, next to the Mercè Market, with an area of more than 1,200 square metres of sales room. The second store will open in Madrid capital, on calle Peña Gorbea, on September 15, with more than 1,300 square metres of sales room, and 30 parking spaces.
These openings are part of Lidl’s sustainable expansion plan in Spain, which plans to invest around 230 million euro in 2023 to open twenty new stores and expand its logistics infrastructure. Recently, the company opened a warehouse in Escúzar, Granada, with an investment of 88 million euro and the creation of 250 new jobs, and has plans to open four more warehouses in Parla, Madrid; Martorell, Barcelona; Constantí, Tarragona; and Villadangos del Páramo, León, in the coming years.
The economic impact of Lidl in Spain is significant, contributing more than 7 billion euro to the GDP annually, which represents 0.65% of the total, and generating more than 150,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs, equivalent to 0.76 % of the total, according to PwC data. The company has increased its impact on the national GDP and employment by 50% during the period 2016-2021, consolidating itself as one of the main generators of wealth and employment in the country.
