The last week of summer will be conditioned by the arrival of an isolated high-level depression (DANA) that will leave cool temperatures for this time of year, favouring an almost autumnal atmosphere and “strong and persistent” showers, more intense in the east of the peninsula and in Balearic Islands.
Although Monday was a generally calm day, with rain in the west of the peninsula in the early hours, according to Rubén del Campo, spokesperson for the State Meteorological Agency. (AEMET), a DANA to the east and southeast of the peninsula is expected for Tuesday.
The DANA will be located around the Gulf of Cádiz and will cause an increase in atmospheric instability, especially in the afternoon and evening, with rain and stormy showers around Melilla and in eastern Andalusia, Region of Murcia, and the south of the Valencian Community and Castilla-La Mancha.
Del Campo has warned that on the Mediterranean coast and in the Balearic archipelago, during the day on Wednesday, the rainfall will be heavy and accompanied by hail in areas close to the coast of the Valencian Community, Catalonia, Ibiza and Formentera.
At this point, the spokesperson has warned that these rains could be locally “very strong and persistent”, which is why he has asked “to take extreme precautions, in the event of flooding in low-lying areas or sudden flooding of boulevards, which usually carry little water or are dry.”
Regarding temperatures, on Wednesday the maximum temperatures will drop in most of the country: “A cool day is expected for the season in the interior of the peninsula, in few areas they will reach 25 degrees and in some parts of the eastern interior the thermometers will remain between 5 and 10 degrees below normal for this time.”
By Thursday, DANA will have already moved away from the peninsula, although it may still leave early morning showers in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, but a front associated with an Atlantic storm will come into action that will sweep the country from west to east with widespread rains in its wake, weaker and more dispersed in the Mediterranean.
On Friday, although some blows from the front are still expected in the north of the country, large clearings will open to give way to a stable weekend throughout the country, with temperatures still cool on Friday, although for Saturday and Sunday they will begin a general rise, more pronounced in the northern half, reaching values more typical of the time of year.
