Footfall in Spanish shopping centres registered an increase of 6.2% in August 2023 compared to the same month of the previous year, according to the monthly index of Sensormatic Solutions, a Johnson Controls brand specialised in solutions for the retail sector. Regarding the accumulated annual figure, this reached 8.7%.
In the case of Portugal, the influx of customers to shopping centres increased by 4.6% in August 2023 compared to the same month of the previous year, with an annual cumulative increase of 9.4%.
This increase, although moderate, can be attributed to a combination of economic and social factors that have influenced consumer behaviour. On the one hand, the Spanish economy experienced a 2.6% increase in the annual variation rate of the CPI in August 2023, according to INE data, which affected the cost of living and reduced the margin for discretionary spending, due to an annual accumulated inflation of 3%.
Regarding Portugal, inflation reached 3.7% in the CPI, with an accumulated inflation of 1.3% in 2023. On the other hand, during the vacation period, an increase in the geographic mobility of consumers is traditionally observed, which alters their entertainment patterns and consumption habits, directing them towards summer destinations and free-time activities, for example.
