Taxi boss on fraud charge

The Provincial Court of Madrid will hear evidence from today, Tuesday, against a former president of the Madrid Autotaxi Guild Association, for having charged the association with expenses “of a personal nature” to the tune of 136,385 euro since none of the money withdrawals made had the corresponding accounting justification “that proves its investment in the fulfilment of statutory purposes.”

The Madrid Provincial Prosecutor’s Office requests four years in prison for a crime of misappropriation. According to the indictment, the accused held the position of president of the Madrid Autotaxi Guild Association from October 19, 2015 to November 27, 2019 “enjoying a net monthly remuneration of 2,300 euro.”

Among his powers was to obtain a Business Gold card for expenses in the exercise of his statutorily assigned functions, from which he withdrew successive amounts of cash worth a total of 76,130 euro, “with the intention of illicit enrichment.” The amounts extracted did not exceed 50,000 euro with which he made personal expenses such as travel, meals or other items.

Specifically, he spent 25,137 euro on trips, 8,284 euro on restaurants, 5,843 euro on other purchases, 4,806 euro on fuel, 4,438 euro at a tobacconist’s shop, 4,164 euro at a supermarket, 3,663 euro on purchases at El Cortes Inglés, 2,128 euro at a pharmacy and other items.

In total, the amount for these concepts amounts to 60,255 euro “without any of the extractions or dispositions having accounting justification that proves their investment in the fulfilment of statutory purposes.” These charges and personal expenses were lavished during the more than four years that it was as the Madrid Autotaxi Guild Association for a total amount of 136,385 euro.
