PP and VOX intend to stop the parliamentary debate with an amendment to the entire bill of En Comú Podem and the CUP. The animal rights entities of the Prou Correbous platform celebrate that the initiative is moving forward and we ask political groups for courage.

On April 7, 2022, the parliamentary groups of the CUP and En Comú Podem registered a bill in the Parliament of Catalonia to eliminate the most aggressive forms of ‘correbous’. The proposal proposed modifying Law 34/2010, of October 1, regulating traditional festivals with bulls, eliminating three modalities from the second article of the norm, specifically the modality of the embolado bull, the roped bull and the bull on the beach.

Of the 450 events with bulls that take place each year in Catalonia, approximately 160 are bullfighting bulls and around fifty are roped bulls.

Prou Correbous are in contact with the different parliamentary groups to ensure that the PP and VOX amendment is rejected at the next plenary session on Wednesday, October 25, the only groups that have presented amendments in their entirety against the bill promoted by the platform. and presented by En Comú Podem and CUP to eliminate emboldened bulls, roped bulls and bulls on the beach.

THE CRUELEST MODALITIES

The bulls on the beach stopped being celebrated many years ago due to health problems, and the bulls at sea stopped being celebrated after the Contentious-Administrative Court number 1 of Tarragona ordered the Generalitat to open a sanctioning file on the organisers of the bulls to the sea held in l’Ampolla (Baix Ebre) in the summer of 2013 for animal abuse and violation of the regulations, since the bulls to the sea are not regulated by law, despite the fact that It was a modality that was carried out annually at the port of this municipality and also in the Casas de Alcanar. It involved making the bulls fall into the water to rescue them from a boat with a rope tied to the neck or horns and returning the animal to dry land to continue with the show.

One of the historical objectives of animal protection entities in Catalonia has been to put an end to bullfighting bulls, due to the extreme cruelty to which they are subjected. In this modality, the animals are tied up and brutally immobilised against a wooden pylon.

It is very common that during the embolada the bull suffers sudden falls, bumps on the head, or that the animal gets tangled in the rope, being immobilised by the legs or poorly positioned in front of the pylon, so the process often ends up being still longer and more distressing for the animal. Once immobilised, metal fittings are attached to the horns and balls impregnated with a flammable substance are placed at the ends, capable of keeping the fire lit for a prolonged period of about 20 minutes. These balls are then set on fire and the rope that holds it is cut, so that the bull is encouraged to charge in portable squares or along delimited streets of the town.

Embalting a bull can put the lives of these animals at risk, in addition to involving physical injuries and stress. Some of these animals are directly sent to the slaughterhouse after the show, since sometimes bullfighting groups buy wild bulls and after the show they are sent to the slaughterhouse.

Another controversial modality, although much less numerous, is that of the roped bull, which consists of the release of a bull with two ropes tied around its head in order to control its movements and attacks. The suffering in this modality is accentuated by the exhaustion of the bulls, as they are pushed to the limits of their aerobic capacity for approximately 30 to 50 minutes. In all the celebrations you can see how, shortly after starting, the animals resort to abdominal breathing with their mouths open, tongue out and profuse salivation. On many occasions, the bulls cannot finish the route, and the truck has to go look for them. The heat of the summer months, hunger and thirst exacerbate their suffering, to such an extent that sometimes bulls have died inside the trucks, or they have not been able to endure the journey to the end, leaving them exhausted and refusing to move forward.

HOPE THAT THE PROPOSAL CONTINUES ITS PARLIAMENTARY COURSE

In September 2019, the Parliament already approved a proposed commons resolution that called for the end of correbous in Catalonia from the Government. The initiative was approved with 50 votes in favour, 17 against and 61 abstentions. JxCat, PSC and ERC gave their deputies freedom to vote and the CUP did not participate in the vote because it left the plenary session after the imprisonment of seven members of the CDR. However, with the change of government, this proposal fell by the wayside.

The Prou Correbous entities trust that the PP and VOX amendment will not go ahead, since approving it would mean vetoing a healthy and necessary debate, and because furthermore, in the event that the bill were finally approved, it would not veto all of the correbous in Catalonia, but only the most violent and dangerous modalities.

Representatives of the entities will be present in the chamber, including Tots Som Poble, an association of residents of Amposta, established in 2019 to make visible the sector of Ebrense society that rejects animal abuse and the hijacking of festivals by the clubs.

The entities that form the coordinating group of the Prou Correbous platform are ADDA, AnimaNaturalis, FAADA, Fundació Fauna, Fundación Franz Weber, Lex Ànima, Libera! and Tots Som Poble.
