Both the Spanish Government and security services are keen to dispel rumours spread through social networks that the terror level in Spain has increased. The threat level remains at level 4, although there is an increase in security staff in key areas, including transport infrastructure, and the Catalan police will be holding a security drill in Barcelona.
The Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police, along with their national colleagues, have increased security in critical areas of the city, after the outbreak of the conflict between Palestine and Israel. Among the battery of measures announced, a large security drill at Sants station is included, “the most complex and largest to date in Catalonia.”
According to the police, “it will serve to put technological means and police procedures into practice”, as indicated by the chief commissioner of the Mossos d’Esquadra, Eduard Sallent, after the 70th meeting of the Anti-Terrorism Cabinet. The drill will take place on the night of October 26 to 27 between 11:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.
The operation will mobilise all emergency services and will have four levels of complexity: citizen security, public order, special intervention units and territorial closure. It will be carried out in the lobby area and high-speed platforms, but there will also be ambulances, police and emergency vehicles on the street.
It is important to note that this is a planned drill, in order to check functionality and procedures, and therefore should not be cause for alarm.
