Employment maintained its dynamism in the third quarter and increased to 21,265,900 people, which represents a historical record of people working, according to the Active Population Survey (EPA), published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
In the third quarter, employment and the active population continued to increase, employment stability was reinforced and the creation of jobs in the private sector continued, which highlights the dynamism and structural change of the labour market, the effectiveness of reforms adopted and the strength of the Spanish economy in the complex international context.
Between July and September, job creation continued, with an increase of 209,100 workers. A dynamism that is also reflected in the increase in the active population that reached a new historical maximum, with a growth of 301,900 people in the last quarter, reaching 24,121,000 people.
In this context of increase in the active population, unemployment increased from July to September by 92,700 people, 3.3%, (0% with data corrected for seasonality). The total number of unemployed stood at 2,855,200 people and unemployment stood at 11.8%.
During the quarter, employment stability has continued to be strengthened, with an increase in permanent contracts of 232,100, compared to 33,900 temporary contracts, which has allowed the temporary employment rate to continue reducing to the minimum of 17.2%, which is close to the European average.
Likewise, it should be noted that most of the employment was created by the private sector, with an increase of 192,200 people, reaching 17,731,100 employees, the highest level of private employment since 2007. The dynamics of last year are thus maintained, in which the private sector created 691,600 jobs, with a growth of 4.1%, compared to 28,600 in the public sector, 0.8% more.
In the third quarter, full-time employment increased by 379,700 people and part-time employment decreased by more than 170,000, with the percentage of people working part-time falling to 12.6%.
Occupation
Employment increased by 720,100 people in the last year (+3.5%), reaching 21,265,900 people, the highest figure in the historical series. In the last quarter, employment increased by 209,100 people. In seasonally adjusted terms it grew by 0.75%.
Employment in year-on-year terms registered the greatest growth in the Services sector, with 682,400 more employees, Construction, with 49,600, and Industry, with 15,200 people and decreased in Agriculture by 27,100. In the third quarter of the year, the Services sector created 138,700 jobs, closely followed by Industry, with 98,800 more workers and Construction, with 19,500, while employment decreased in Agriculture by 47,800 people.
Regarding the Autonomous Communities, occupancy increased in almost all regions in the last 12 months. The largest increases occurred in Catalonia, with 156,500 more employed people, the Valencian Community, with 130,300 and the Community of Madrid, with 119,300.
In the third quarter, the largest increases in employment occurred in the Valencian Community, with 80,700 more workers, followed by Catalonia, with 62,400, and the Balearic Islands, with 35,200. On the contrary, employment fell in the Community of Madrid, with 15,700 fewer workers.
In the third quarter, the temporary employment rate continued to be reduced to 17.2%. In the last 12 years, permanent employment increased by 102,000 people, while temporary employment decreased by 385,500.
Likewise, the partiality rate continued to reduce to 12.5% ​​in the third quarter. In the last year, full-time employment registered an increase of 665,000 people, much higher than the increase registered by part-time employment (55,100 people).
By gender, female employment has increased by 447,500 people in the last year and continued to grow in the third quarter, with 78,600 more women employed. For its part, male employment in year-on-year terms also increased by 272,600 workers and by 130,500 in the last quarter.
Unemployment
Unemployment fell by 125,000 people in the last year (-4.2%), with an increase of 92,700 people in the third quarter (3.36%) to 2,855,200 people, placing the unemployment rate at 11 .8%. In seasonally adjusted terms the quarterly variation is 0%.
In year-on-year terms, unemployment fell in Construction, with 12,300 fewer unemployed, and in Agriculture, with 11,100 fewer unemployed. On the contrary, it increased in Services, with 14,800 more unemployed, and in Industry, with an increase of 1,200. In the third quarter of the year, unemployment decreased in Construction, with 21,100 fewer unemployed and increased in Services, with 35,900 more unemployed, Agriculture, with 16,900 and Industry, with 4,700.
By Autonomous Communities, the greatest decreases in annual terms occurred in the Valencian Community, with 31,700 fewer unemployed, the Canary Islands, with 25,000 and Castilla-La Mancha, with 24,900. In the last quarter, the greatest drops in unemployment were recorded in Castilla-La Mancha, with 11,900 fewer unemployed people, followed by the Balearic Islands, with 8,400 and Aragon, with 5,600. On the contrary, the greatest increases occurred in the Community of Madrid, with 37,600 more unemployed and Andalusia, with 30,700.
During the third quarter, youth unemployment continued to decline, standing at 27.8%, the lowest rate since 2008.
