78.8% of Spaniards with a smartphone had Android as their operating system compared to 16.3% who preferred iOS, according to data from the CNMC (National Markets and Competition Commission) Household Panel for the second quarter of 2023, which analyses the use of the Internet and OTT services in Spain.
Young people abound among iOS users, while Android users are older. Four out of every ten citizens who used iOS were between 15 and 34 years old, while for Android the proportion was just over two out of ten. 43.5% of Android users were over 50 years old, while for iOS the percentage was 25.5%.
Internet use continued to rise, with nine out of ten people going online at least once in the past three months and almost 80% reporting using it several times a day. Browsing from the telephone also grew and 85.5% of Spaniards with mobile phones accessed the Internet using a mobile broadband service.
Among Internet users, WhatsApp continued to be the application par excellence for sending messages (almost 95%) and for making video calls (67%). Regarding online messaging, behind WhatsApp were Instagram (34.5%), Facebook Messenger (24.9%) and Telegram (18.7%).
More than 80% of Spaniards with a smartphone used it several times a day to send or receive messages online. Almost half used it daily to browse social networks and 43.2% to check email. The least used services were watching videos (28.1%), playing games (21.3%) and location services (10.4%).
70.5% of Spaniards sent online messages several times a day and 30.3% sent voice notes. Users who called with their mobile phone (34.8%) far exceeded those who used a landline (8%); In fact, 43.6% said they never used it to make calls. 64.1% of the population stated that they do not use their mobile phone to send SMS.
These results are part of the CNMC Household Panel, a semi-annual survey of households and individuals. The CNMC aims to collect information directly from citizens through surveys and analysis of service bills. The study is multisectoral in nature and collects data related to the telecommunications, audiovisual, energy, postal and transportation markets, among others. The survey for this wave was carried out in the second quarter of 2023 and included 5,217 households and 9,095 individuals. This tool provides extensive and diverse information, and allows the CNMC to better understand the point of view of consumers.
