Small boat skippers on trial

Published

on

The trial begins today against two people accused of skippering a boat that arrived at the island of Cabrera in the Balearics with 21 people on board, seven of them minors.

The Prosecutor requests eight years in prison for each of the defendants for a crime against the rights of foreign citizens.

The events date back to December 28, 2022, when the defendants tried to illegally access Spanish territory by sea with a boat-type vessel with 21 migrants. According to the Public Ministry’s account, one of the defendants was in charge of the rudder and the other was in charge of guiding the route. They were intercepted at dawn in the waters of Cabrera.

The vessel, the Prosecutor continues, exceeded its capacity and did not have the minimum security measures, which turned the journey into a serious risk for the safety of the occupants.

In addition, each occupant would have paid between 1,500 and 2,500 euro to be able to make the journey.
