The judge of the Criminal Court number 1 of Lugo has disqualified a Samos resident from owning animals, as well as from exercising a profession or trade that is related to animals, for three years for poisoning a cat with rodenticide.
The judge, who has considered him responsible for the crime of animal abuse, has also sentenced him to one year in prison, a sentence which has been suspended for a period of two years, conditional on him not committing a crime during that period.
In the sentence, it is considered proven that the accused, in August 2021, placed on the entrance threshold of an uninhabited house that is located about twenty metres from his home two portions of a mixture of animal feed and a poison used on rodents.
The magistrate indicates that a cat owned by a neighbour from the same town, who assured that the condemned man “always complained about cats,” suffered poisoning after partially ingesting one of the baits placed by the defendant. She needed three days of hospitalisation to heal her injuries. Furthermore, the judge highlights in the ruling that the town of Samos is considered a protected area.
