Electronic commerce in Spain exceeded 20 billion euro in the second quarter of 2023

E-commerce turnover in Spain has increased by 12.7% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2023 to reach 20,5 billion euro, 12.7% more than the previous year, according to the latest e-commerce data available on the CNMCData portal.

The activity sectors with the highest income have been travel agencies and tour operators, with 11.2% of total turnover; air transport, with 6.2% and clothing, in third place, with 5.6%.

If we look at the number of transactions, in the second quarter of 2023, more than 371 million transactions have been recorded, 14.1% more. Games of chance and betting lead the ranking in sales (6.9%).

Regarding geographical segmentation, 44.5% of revenues in the second quarter of 2023 were destined for Spain. The remaining 55.5% corresponds to purchases originating in Spain made abroad.

The net foreign balance (the difference between what is purchased from abroad to Spain and what is purchased from Spain abroad) shows a deficit of 8,5 billion euro.

By number of transactions, 36.7% of purchases and sales are destined for Spain and 63.3% abroad.

The business volume of transactions originating in Spain and directed abroad has been 11,4 billion euro, 17.4% more than in the second quarter of the previous year. 94.0% of purchases from Spain abroad are made in stores located in the European Union.

The branches of activity with the highest volume of business from Spain to abroad are clothing (8.4%), travel agencies (8.0%) and air transport (6.8%).

For its part, sales from abroad with Spain have reached a turnover of 2,8 billion euro, 7.9% more than in the second quarter of the previous year. 59.8% of purchases from abroad come from the European Union.

Likewise, the areas of activity related to the tourism sector (which includes travel agencies, air transport, land transport, car rental and hotels) account for 63.1% of purchases from abroad with Spain.

E-commerce revenues within Spain have risen 6.9% year-on-year to 6,3 billion euro. Public administration, taxes and social security lead the billing within Spain (9.9%).
