Pellet crisis comes to Congress
The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, will appear before the Plenary Session of the Congress of Deputies today to report on the measures and actions of the Executive in response to the spill of ‘pellets’ that appeared on the Galician coast in the last two months.
According to the provisional agenda for next week’s plenary session, Puente’s appearance will be the first by a member of the Government before the Plenary Session in 2024 and occurs in the middle of the campaign for the Parliamentary elections in Galicia.
On December 8, 2023, the Toconao, a Liberian-flagged cargo ship, lost six containers off the coast of Portugal, one of which was transporting 1,050 bags of pellets (26,250 kilos), tiny plastic balls that began to arrive to the coasts of Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria.
Last January, the so-called “pellet crisis” sparked a political row and a clash of accusations between the acting Galician Government and the central Executive regarding the speed of action and the responsibilities of each administration to contain the spill.
