Risk of rain from Thursday
As much of the country is suffering in drought, Catalonia having declared an emergency situation, there may be some hope with the threat of rain starting on Thursday through to Sunday.
After three weeks without significant rainfall, starting on Thursday and ending on Sunday, an episode of widespread rain is expected throughout Spain with very significant accumulations on the peninsular Atlantic coast and less heavy accumulations in the Mediterranean and Canary Islands, according to the forecast by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
Anticyclonic weather had been expected to continue in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, although the approach of an isolated depression at high levels (DANA) is expected to increase medium and high cloudiness in the Peninsula.
The agency has activated yellow warnings in up to six autonomous communities due to poor visibility between 200 and 400 metres: the Basque Country, the Balearic Islands, Aragon, Catalonia, Galicia and Navara.
Yesterday, the change in weather started to transition from an anticyclonic regime, with a DANA finishing crossing the eastern peninsula and the Balearic Islands, as well as the approach of an Atlantic front from the west.
For Thursday, rainfall will be significant in the western half of the peninsula, the Cantabrian area and the western Pyrenees, although further progress cannot be ruled out, although less likely the further east. In the Mediterranean area they are very unlikely. They can be locally strong and persistent in Galicia, west of the Central System and the Cantabrian mountain range.
The rainiest day will be Friday, when a drop in temperatures is also expected, more markedly in the southeastern half of the peninsula and without major changes in the Canary Islands.
