Electricity demand in Spain increased 1.1% in January, and renewables generated 52.1%, with wind power being the first source of generation in Spain for the fourth consecutive month with 24.6% of all electricity production for the month.
National electricity demand experienced an increase of 1.1% in January compared to the same month of the previous year, once the effects of temperature and work hours were discounted. In gross terms, a demand of 22,185 GWh is estimated, 0.9% higher than that of January 2023.
During this month, 52.1% of the electricity produced in the country has been of renewable origin, up to 12,202 GWh. Wind power has been, for the fourth consecutive month, the leading source of the Spanish generation structure, registering 24.6% of total electricity production (5,755 GWh).
Hydroelectric power, favoured by the rains that fell in part of the peninsular territory, occupies third position in the generation mix of our country, with 17.4% of the total and a production of 4,084 GWh, 5.8% more than in the same month of 2023.
Technologies that do not emit CO2 equivalent accounted for 75.3% of the total in January.
In the peninsular electricity system, demand in January was 0.9% higher than in the same month of 2023, taking into account the effects of work schedules and temperatures. In gross terms, a demand of 20,946 GWh has been registered, 0.8% more than in the same month of the previous year.
The set of peninsular renewables generated almost 54.2% of the total in January, according to the provisional data available today, which shows a production of 12,089 GWh. For their part, emission-free technologies contributed 78.6% of the total.
The peninsular generation structure in January is also led by wind power, which has been responsible for 25.6% of the total with 5,701 GWh produced during this month.
This January in the Balearic Islands, electricity demand increased by 4.3% once the effects of work hours and temperatures were taken into account. In gross terms, monthly demand is estimated at 448,532 MWh, 0.5% lower than that registered in January 2023.
Regarding generation, the combined cycle, with 77.4% of the energy produced in the Balearic Islands, was the islands’ first source in January. For its part, renewable energy without CO2 equivalent emissions generated in the Balearic community has increased by 25.2% compared to the same month of the previous year and represents 10.1% of the total.
Furthermore, during this month, the submarine link between the Peninsula and Mallorca contributed to covering 27.4% of the Balearic electricity demand.
For its part, in the Canary archipelago, the demand for electrical energy, once work schedules and temperatures are taken into account, has increased by 4.8% compared to the same month of the previous year. In gross terms, demand stood at 754,977 MWh, 4.9% higher.
Regarding electricity generation in the Canary Islands, the combined cycle, with 48.7% of the total, was the first source in the month of January, while renewables and emission-free technologies represented 10.6% of the production.
