The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility highlights the success of the free Cercanías, Rodalies and conventional Media Distancia services for regular travellers, as well as the 50% discounts for Avant services, approved by the Government on December 27, 2023.
As announced by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, Renfe has already issued more than two million free Cercanías, Rodalies and Media Distancia passes and 50% discounted Avant tickets for travel from January 1 to January 30. April 2024.
According to the data provided by the railway operator, of the total number of free multi-trip tickets issued by Renfe, more than 1.4 million correspond to tickets to travel in the different centers of Cercanías, Rodalies and Cercanías Ancho Métrico, while the Media Distancia tickets exceed 500,000.
In addition to the free passes for regular travellers, Renfe has issued nearly 75,000 tickets with 50% Avant discounts for use on high-speed Media Distancia services.
To speed up the acquisition of passes and avoid unnecessary waits, Renfe recommends obtaining them through the Cercanías Renfe app or, in the case of Media Distancia and Avant passes, through the website www.renfe.com.
At the end of 2023, the Government approved to extend the discounts for another year to facilitate sustainable solutions for daily mandatory mobility. The objective, therefore, is to encourage the use of collective public transport to the detriment of private vehicles, accelerate the change to healthier, safer and more sustainable mobility, contribute to reducing polluting emissions and guarantee the accessibility and affordability of transport.
And it is that, for example, the savings throughout the year 2024 for a family (couple with two children over 14 years old) that uses the Cercanías train from the outskirts of Madrid, from the ‘crown’ or zone B3 (one of the most used), will be 3,297 euro, 274.7 euro per month.
The savings, under similar mobility conditions, will be 3,357 euro in Barcelona, almost 280 per month; and 5,585 euro in Valencia, 465.4 euro per month. Likewise, a Sevillian student, on their routes to the university of Seville, can save 920 euro annually in the case of a user of the study pass, which covers the 6 areas of the Seville Cercanías.
For their part, a traveller who uses the conventional medium-distance route between Valladolid and Palencia will save 1,252 euro throughout the year that the measure is in effect. In the case of the line between Ourense and A Coruña, the annual savings for travellers who purchase passes to make 40 trips per month amounts to 4,966 euro. Furthermore, a person who travels every Friday between Seville and Palma del Río on a medium-distance train, and returns on Sundays, saves 756.8 euro per year with the discounts.
