French grocery retailer Alcampo, in collaboration with Moda re-, has inaugurated a corner dedicated to second-hand clothing in its hypermarket located in the Parque Corredor shopping centre, in Torrejón de Ardoz, Madrid.
This opening increases the number of similar corners in the Community of Madrid to 7 and to 27 throughout Spain, marking the third anniversary since the first initiative of this type was launched in Barcelona.
The new space in Torrejón de Ardoz has more than 500 clothing items for women, men and children, as well as accessories, with prices ranging from 2 to 20 euro.
Moda re-, the collaborator in this initiative, is a group of 50 insertion companies promoted by Cáritas that employ more than 1,500 individuals, more than half of them at risk of social exclusion. Employees receive training working on tasks such as collecting, selecting and selling clothing, as well as in areas of transportation, industrial classification and customer service.
The initiative not only focuses on social inclusion but also on sustainability, since all “Moda” garments are second-hand, previously classified and sanitized, collected through more than 250 solidarity containers managed by Cáritas in Madrid.
The project is also supported by three industrial treatment plants in Mungia (Vizcaya), Riba-roja (Valencia) and Barcelona, where the garments are prepared for subsequent reuse or recycling. With more than 160 points of sale under the Moda re- brand, it is positioned as one of the European leaders in the sector.
Laura Picón, director of Alcampo Torrejón, commented: “Our Moda second-hand clothing corner responds to our clear commitment to the circular economy and the inclusion of people at risk of exclusion, two axes on which we work firmly in Alcampo”.
