Legal and the Law in Spain
Free Legal Aid Law to be overhauled this year
A new Free Legal Aid Law, Ley de Asistencia Jurídica Gratuita, to replace the current one from 1996, is included in the Government’s legislative agenda for this year, as reported by the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Courts, Felix Bolaños.
“We will continue to advance in rights for citizens… We will also address the Free Legal Aid Law, the current one is from 1996 and deserves that the new circumstances that operate in the legal and social market be incorporated into a new law,” Bolaños stated at a press conference after the Council of Ministers.
Bolaños has detailed the Government’s legislative agenda for this year, in which, he assured, they want to promote 198 initiatives for approval. Among them will be, in addition to the new Free Legal Aid Law, the reform of the Criminal Procedure Law, and an organic Law of complementary measures to strengthen protection against gender violence.
The reform of the Free Legal Aid Law is one of the priorities of the Legal Profession, which has been negotiating for several months with the Government and sector associations what this new law should include. At the VIII Free Justice Conference, which will be held in Valladolid on April 18 and 19, what the future norm should be will also be debated.
