Pilar de la Horadada Motorway Tunnel to get 4 Million Euro Upgrade

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has put out to tender the contract for the modernisation and energy efficiency improvement works of the Pilar de la Horadada tunnel, located on the Crevillente-Cartagena section of the AP-7, in the province of Alicante.

The contract is valued at 4.4 million euro (IVA included), with the objective to provide the tunnel with the necessary facilities and equipment to continue guaranteeing safety for tunnel users, as well as to reduce energy consumption in its operation by improving the efficiency of its facilities, through intelligent lighting management.

Thus, the power supply facilities, emergency lighting, evacuation signage, emergency posts, public address system, hydrant network, ventilation systems, installation of new automatic fire detection cameras, traffic gauges or closing barriers will be modernised, among others.

The lighting system will also be adapted with the aim of obtaining an improvement in the energy efficiency of the installation, through the incorporation of an intelligent control and regulation system, making it necessary to update the current VSAP luminaire technology with dimmable LED equipment.

The intelligent management system for lighting regulation and control will allow continuous regulation of lighting, equipment by equipment, depending on the external luminance and the tunnel occupancy level.

In addition, independent vestibules will be built in the tunnels for the evacuation of people through the galleries, and the burial of two horizontal tanks of 60 m³ capacity for fire protection.

The project will be financed through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, charged to the NextGenerationEU European funds, which contemplate investments of up to 302 million euro (IVA not included) in sustainability, energy efficiency and action against noise on the state motorway network.
