Rubber dinghy carrying two tons of hashish intercepted

The Guardia Civil has seized 2,345 kilos of hashish after intercepting an inflatable boat on the coast of Gran Canaria. The two crew members – aged 36 and 26 – have been arrested for a crime against public health.

The police device, in which agents from the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police and the Provincial Maritime Service of the Guardia Civil in Las Palmas have participated, has been deployed by land and sea.

Locating the drug boat has been possible thanks to the cooperation with the General Directorate of Surveillance over the Moroccan Territory (DGST), warning of the arrival on the coast of Gran Canaria of a boat – coming from Morocco – with the purpose of landing in the island coast.

As a result of police coordination between maritime and land means, the agents were able to detect a small boat that was sailing without lights near the coast.

Suspecting that it was the boat in question, Guardia Civil officers from the Maritime Service – on board the patrol boat Río Tambre – made an approach and observed that it was a pneumatic boat that was carrying numerous bundles of those usually used to transport drugs from Morocco to Spain.

The rapid action has led to the seizure of 66 bales of hashish, weighing more than 2,300 kilograms, and the arrest of its two occupants. In addition, the seven-metre-long inflatable boat in which they were sailing, two outboard motors, a satellite phone, two GPS devices and several cell phones have been seized.

The proceedings carried out by the Organised Crime and Anti-Drug Team of Las Palmas, together with the detainees, have been placed at the disposal of the Investigative Court No. 1, agreeing to their entry into provisional prison.

The investigation remains open, so new arrests are not ruled out.
