The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) will rule on Thursday whether single mothers can enjoy double maternity leave; the one that corresponds to them and the one that would correspond to the other parent. This issue is currently being analysed by the Constitutional Court.
The Court will resolve the case of a woman who had a child in 2021 and requested the National Institute of Social Security and the General Treasury of Social Security for the additional sixteen weeks of leave that would have corresponded to the other parent if she had had a partner, as is the case in two-parent families.
Both organisations rejected the request under the argument that paternal leave in two-parent families is not automatic, since each parent must meet certain requirements. So granting it to a single mother automatically would be discrimination against two-parent families.
The Guardia Civil has seized 4,000 kilos of hashish in two plots in the town of La Puebla del Río (Seville). The operation occurred at dawn at the end of April when agents from the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil of Algeciras observed a van driving through an area near the river carrying out manoeuvres that raised suspicions.
The Guardia Civils organised a security device with the agents that culminated with the searches of the plots, where 114 bales of hashish, a plantation with 260 marijuana plants, two stolen vans, as well as numerous documentation of the perpetrators of the events were seized.
The seized hashish weighed 4,000 kilos, much of it dosed in small quantities with chocolate bar wrappers.
A survey carried out by Ipsos I&O Public on behalf of the Dutch animal protection organisation CAS International has revealed that bullfighting is facing growing opposition in Spain, France and Portugal, despite the recent resurgence led mostly by the far-right VOX party in Spain, enabled by the PP. The results show a resounding rejection of this reviled practice that many consider causes too much suffering for animals.
Spain, France and Portugal are the European countries where bullfighting is still legal, and where different types of “celebrations” still take place with bulls, calves and fighting cows, including San Isidro festivities this week. Every year thousands of animals suffer mistreatment and a slow and painful death before the eyes of the public. (In Spain it is estimated that between 18,000 and 20,000 die in these bullfighting celebrations annually).
