Taking your pet on holiday can make the trip even more enjoyable, but it also comes with extra responsibilities. Just like any other passenger, animals should travel safely and comfortably throughout the journey.
Spanish traffic rules require pets to be transported in a way that does not distract the driver. Small animals should travel in a secure carrier, while larger dogs are best restrained with a suitable harness or carried behind an approved load guard. Allowing a pet to move freely around the vehicle can put everyone at risk, particularly during sudden braking.
Summer temperatures create additional hazards. A parked car can become dangerously hot within minutes, even if the windows are left slightly open. Never leave a pet alone inside a vehicle, even for a short time.
Plan regular breaks so your pet can drink water, stretch its legs and cool down. Carry plenty of fresh water, a travel bowl, any medication your pet may need, waste bags and identification. If your pet is not used to long journeys, shorter practice trips before your holiday can help reduce stress.
With a little preparation, you can help ensure that every member of the family, including those with four legs, arrives safely and ready to enjoy the holiday.
