A parked car can become dangerously hot during the Spanish summer, with interior temperatures rising far above the outside air temperature in a short space of time. As well as being uncomfortable, excessive heat can affect both your safety and your vehicle.
Before setting off, open the doors or windows for a minute or two to let the trapped hot air escape. Once the cabin has cooled slightly, use the air conditioning to reach a comfortable temperature. Staying cool behind the wheel helps reduce fatigue and improves concentration on longer journeys.
Whenever possible, park in the shade or use a reflective windscreen sunshade to reduce heat build-up and help protect the dashboard and interior from sun damage. Keep in mind that the sun moves throughout the day, so a shaded space may not stay shaded.
High temperatures can also damage medication, electronic devices and food left inside the vehicle. Most importantly, never leave children, older passengers or pets in a parked car, even for a few minutes, as temperatures can rise to dangerous levels very quickly.
Planning ahead by carrying drinking water, sunglasses and other essentials can also make summer journeys more comfortable and enjoyable.
