Wildfires are an unfortunate reality in parts of Spain during the summer, particularly in rural and mountainous areas. While most drivers will never encounter one, knowing how to respond can help keep you and your passengers safe.
Smoke is often the first and greatest danger, reducing visibility and making it harder to judge road conditions. If you drive into smoke, slow down, increase the distance from the vehicle ahead and use dipped headlights. Avoid full beam, as it can make visibility even worse.
If a road has been closed due to a wildfire, never ignore the signs or attempt to continue. Fires can change direction rapidly, and closures are put in place to protect motorists from becoming trapped.
If you see smoke or flames ahead and it is safe to do so, turn around and follow any diversion routes. Should you become trapped, remain calm, keep the windows closed, switch the ventilation system to recirculation and, if possible, move to an open area away from trees and vegetation. Call 112 if it is safe to do so and provide your location as accurately as possible.
Drivers can also help prevent wildfires by never discarding cigarette ends, avoiding parking on dry grass and disposing of litter responsibly.
